Email said my Geek Squad subscription auto-renewed for $399. Called to cancel. They walked me through 'refunding' it which actually wired money out of my account.
How this scam type works
From our Tech Support Scams guide.
- The scary pop-up or call. Loud audio alarms, red warnings, claims about Microsoft security or an expired antivirus subscription.
- The 'technician'. They sound professional, walk you through harmless commands to 'prove' the problem is real.
- Remote access installed. You're asked to download AnyDesk, TeamViewer, or LogMeIn so they can 'help'.
- The payment. Gift cards, wire transfers, or cryptocurrency — never a normal credit card charge.
- The theft. While you look away, they open your banking apps and transfer funds, or install persistent malware.
