Email said my Geek Squad subscription auto-renewed for $399. Called to cancel. They walked me through 'refunding' it which actually wired money out of my account.

How this scam type works

From our Tech Support Scams guide.

  1. The scary pop-up or call. Loud audio alarms, red warnings, claims about Microsoft security or an expired antivirus subscription.
  2. The 'technician'. They sound professional, walk you through harmless commands to 'prove' the problem is real.
  3. Remote access installed. You're asked to download AnyDesk, TeamViewer, or LogMeIn so they can 'help'.
  4. The payment. Gift cards, wire transfers, or cryptocurrency — never a normal credit card charge.
  5. The theft. While you look away, they open your banking apps and transfer funds, or install persistent malware.
