Tech Support Scams
A loud warning pop-up claims your computer is infected and tells you to call Microsoft. On the call, a 'technician' convinces you to install remote-access software, then charges you thousands for a fake 'fix' — or empties your bank account while you watch.
How it worksThe anatomy of the scam
Every case follows roughly the same playbook. Recognize the pattern, stop it early.
1. The scary pop-up or call
Loud audio alarms, red warnings, claims about Microsoft security or an expired antivirus subscription.
2. The 'technician'
They sound professional, walk you through harmless commands to 'prove' the problem is real.
3. Remote access installed
You're asked to download AnyDesk, TeamViewer, or LogMeIn so they can 'help'.
4. The payment
Gift cards, wire transfers, or cryptocurrency — never a normal credit card charge.
5. The theft
While you look away, they open your banking apps and transfer funds, or install persistent malware.

If you're seeing two or more of these, assume it's a scam until proven otherwise.
Pop-up with a phone number
Legitimate security software never tells you to call someone.
Asked to install remote access software
AnyDesk, TeamViewer, UltraViewer — all legit tools, all weaponized by scammers.
Payment in gift cards or crypto
No real company accepts Apple gift cards for tech support.
Claims of 'Microsoft/Apple calling'
Neither company ever cold-calls customers.

Close the pop-up by force-quitting your browser (Cmd+Q on Mac, Alt+F4 on Windows).

Never call the number in a pop-up.

If you let someone onto your computer, immediately shut it down, disconnect from the internet, and call your bank.
