I got a call from my granddaughter in tears saying she'd been in an accident and needed bail money. The voice was perfect. A 'lawyer' came on and gave me wiring instructions. It was all AI.
How this scam type works
From our AI & Deepfake Scams guide.
- Voice or video harvest. Scammers pull audio from TikTok, YouTube, Instagram stories, or LinkedIn videos.
- Training the clone. Commercial AI tools need only 10-60 seconds of source audio to produce a convincing clone.
- The call or video. A distressed family member calls. A CEO appears on a 'Zoom' asking for an urgent wire transfer.
- Urgency and isolation. 'Don't hang up. Don't tell anyone. I need this now.'
- The transfer. Money moves before verification is possible.
